The deeper into the series, the better the books have gotten.Hopkinson weaves his characters between historical figures, and comes out with a series of books that are hard to put down. He’s able to add tidbits of little known social history and religious history to bring the period back to life. Now, with just a little more character development he could create a classic series. Surta, a literate black former slave, is just waiting to jump off the pages...as indicated example. I will start the next book right away. Really enjoyed this book, part of an exciting series. The action moves fast and provides many surprises, and the author is an excellent novel writer. Love the historicity. But I am always gratified when an author, understanding that many readers of historical novels see them as an interesting view of life in that era, takes the trouble to comment on how their books both do and do not represent those times. I mean, novels can be lovely stuff, but so is history!
